Description of the Project:

The inputs were for two SDC-funded projects – an urban development project in Hue and a Public Administration Reform project in the smaller town of Dong Hoi. Both included solid waste management components. The SKAT staff member was asked to advise on the closing of a former disposal site, on the design and operation of new disposal sites for both places, on improvements to the collection services, and on the management of healthcare wastes from clinics and hospitals.

  • Advice on proposals for closing an old disposal site and the establishment of new sanitary landfills, including operational techniques.
  • Study of existing facilities and practices for the management of healthcare wastes from hospitals and clinics, and recommendations for improvements within hospitals, for the transportation of waste to a central disposal point, and for the location and specification of a central incinerator. It was proposed that the private sector should be involved in specific aspects.
  • Observation of collection methods, collection of performance and generation data, and recommendations for improvements to the collection systems.
