Description of the Project:
The Gyalsung Programme in Bhutan is a national military and professional education initiative aimed at nurturing responsible and competent citizens. It operates through five academies built in different districts across the country. These institutions are expected to generate various types of solid waste, prompting Gyalsung Infra (the implementing agency) to seek sustainable waste management solutions.
To address this, SKAT has been tasked with developing Integrated Solid Waste Management (SWM) Master Plans for each academy. The plans aim to establish the academies as “Zero Waste” model campuses, incorporating systems for reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting waste. The approach includes site assessments, stakeholder consultations, and design of infrastructure such as Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and green procurement systems.
The project also involves integrating management of biomedical and electronic waste, building local capacity, and promoting governance reforms. Educational and awareness components are included to foster long-term behavioral change. The goal is to design sustainable systems with a 25-year outlook that not only manage waste but also serve as learning centers for surrounding communities.
