Energy and Climate

Energy and climate are drivers of wellbeing and sustainability. We enable transitions that are efficient, inclusive, and aligned with a low-carbon future.

Reliable, clean energy transforms lives. It powers households, schools, health centres, and businesses while fostering local employment, reducing energy poverty, and protecting the environment. Beyond infrastructure, access to reliable, clean energy underpins education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, making it a cornerstone of resilient communities.

At SKAT we build on decades of expertise at the intersection of climate protection, renewable energy, and community development. We promote equitable access to sustainable energy technologies, strengthen energy efficiency, and integrate climate action into local development strategies.

Our core competencies are in Just Energy Transition, Renewable Energy, and Energy Efficiency.

We use these frameworks to connect technological innovation with social inclusion, economic opportunity, and climate protection. This enables us to expand access to clean energy, reduce emissions, improve livelihoods, and build resilience, with a clear focus on long-term benefits for both people and the planet.

Core competencies

Just energy transition

Countries heavily reliant on fossil fuels, especially coal, require strong support to follow a “just” pathway to decarbonisation.

SKAT facilitates multi-stakeholder participation in energy policy and practice to ensure that social dimensions are at the core of energy transformation processes. This includes equitable access to clean energy, affordability, local value creation, and transparent governance. We also help design and implement legal and regulatory frameworks, such as net-metering schemes or feed-in tariffs, that ensure broad participation and fair benefits from the transition.

Renewable energy

Energy drives economic development, but conventional production often harms public health and the environment. Through holistic approaches, SKAT promotes equal access to environmentally sound energy technologies that create local value and employment.

We provide expertise in efficient technologies for power generation, transmission, and distribution, and in establishing effective operation and management structures. Our know-how covers mini and small hydropower, including retrofitting existing hydraulic structures with turbines (e.g. drinking water, wastewater and irrigation systems). We also support the integration of variable renewables into existing energy infrastructure by facilitating technical, policy, legal and organisational changes, in close cooperation with ministries, utilities, regulators and other stakeholders.

Energy efficiency

SKAT enhances energy resilience in vulnerable communities through comprehensive efficiency solutions and renewable energy systems. Our approach combines technical expertise with community engagement to deliver sustainable, cost-effective interventions that reduce energy poverty and strengthen local capacity.

We optimise energy use through systematic energy audits, tailored rehabilitation plans, and quality-controlledimplementation. This includes building refurbishments that improve efficiency, lower energy costs, enhance comfort, and extend the lifetime of infrastructure. All interventions prioritise the most cost- and resource-effective measures, ensuring lasting impact through rigorous capacity strengthening and active stakeholder involvement.
